Project Hail Mary is a great sci-fi film. It’s also a deeply Christian one — and most people missed it. Ryan Gosling plays a man who …

  1. Project Hail Mary is now also on my list of favorite space movies for the same reasons you described, maybe even more than Interstellar, or maybe because it's new, not sure yet.

  2. 7:05 Note: it need not be blatant Christianity our culture craves. Spirituality is inherently a part of humanity, perhaps one we can’t shed. Spirituality has had many forms through the millennia. What we call a Christianity is just the most recent iteration.

  3. The meaning of the movie is that having someone to love makes you stop being afraid to die. It's about love and friendship, and science and problem solving. He never sacrificed for humanity, he did it for his friend. That's it.

The name Grace is just a pun from the author, he said he couldn't resist doing the word game. It doesn't have any other meaning. You are force reading a message in the film that wasn't in the minds of the filmmakers.

  4. Hail Mary full of Mr. Grace. self sacrifice even through fear willing to lay down your life for a friend?
And having the Chinese And Russian crew die cuz they’re atheist non-believers so not saved.
Even Jesus was afraid before accepting his fate.
Rocky saves Grace and was resurrected after ‘dying’ for a few days.
Science (Grace) and Religion (Rocky) working together for the better of the universe.
By saving both Earth and Erid, he saved himself and is even able to get back home If he choose to. Win win Win for all.
Yea… a Christian sci-fi story, just not on purpose, it’s a story about the Good in Humanity.

  5. This is the familiar argument that people care for each other because they're made in the image of God and have awareness of divine love.
It ignores what scientists and common people know: that social animals exhibit the same behavior. Elephants mourn their dead. Dogs are famous for loving their families, to the point of sacrificing their lives to fight off an attacker.
Yes, there's some religious terminology in the movie. But nothing like actual theologically relevant content.
BTW1 – IANAC(atholic), but it seems that Catholics recite the Hail Mary routinely, was part of the rosary.
BTW2 – The Combat Rescue prayer that Sec. Hegseth recited spoke of judgment and revenge, not sacrifice.

  6. I myself am Baptist and as such don’t believe in praying to Mary, however the film definitely got the message through in so many other areas that I still found it enjoyable

  7. lol its funny to me how this one story unironically for once merges science and religion in agreement on that this is a great film.
Thats honestly bit of a miracle to me, and shows that this story really hit a core point on "what it means to be human"

  8. I'd add that it shows us we should be accepting of all life, all beings… not just those who look, think, and act like us. We are stronger together. Earth would not have survived without Rocky and Erid… and vice versa.

  9. Thanks for your video! I´ve been thinking a long time that the movie has a deep spiritual undertone and it is actually what made it so impactful for me and made me see it three times in the theater. It touched something really deep …. more than any movie has ever done for me. You explain it so well, and I´m hitting the subscribe button. Thumbs up (or down, in fact :-))))

  10. i'm not sure about others but i surely did not miss the Christian element of this movie haha. the name says it all, and the soundtrack is heavily influenced by choral music

  11. As a side note.
When every try came up short.
And every struggle ends in failure.
If everyone around you applauds destruction.
    Do not hail Mary
Do not look toward any man
    But one
    Our Savior Jesus Christ
    HAIL JESUS!

  12. before i finish watching this video

i wanna say, it's more like a love letter to Astronomy and sci fi, using choirs to encapsulate how beautiful Space is, how God just say "be" and it become millions upon billions of light years across of many stars, endless planets and such, with that being said; Amaze Amaze Amaze, that is all.

  13. Uh, no.
It’s like saying Rocky portrayed some of the best traits of humanity.
Could it be that, maybe, some ideas are universal?
I noticed the title, read the book, and thought “what a great story”.

  14. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mistress of the World and Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer wretched me crying to thee in this vale of tears. Be near me, I beseech thee, in all my necessities, now and always, and especially at the hour of my death.

    Amen.

  15. Andy Weir himself said that it is not a Christian story, so there you go. It is a deeply optimistic humanist story with themes parallel to christian values. It must be shocking that other frameworks value love, friendship and self-sacrifice. Those are not inherently chrsitian values. In the book and movie Grace acted without a hint of religious motivation, I know, unthinkable…

  16. I'm not sure if I completely buy this since the writer (Andy Weir) is atheist/agnostic. It would seem a bit strange to make a Christian book/movie when you're not Christian. To me (and I think this was Andy Weir's intention), this book/movie about humanity working together and putting our differences aside to overcome challenges and has little to do with religion. It's about humanity. This also lines up with other works by Andy Weir ("The Egg" being a notable one).
