    There are claims that Spurgeon had his many critics including the religious Elite of the day

    Somewhere I've seen stated that he was criticized for his animated way of teaching and it seems that his contemporary William Booth who started the Salvation Army some 5 or 6 mi from Metropolitan where Spurgeon was teaching and Booth was subject to physical attacks by the Proprietors that were selling alcohol according to what I recall on a video about him
