I have never been offended by JE owning slaves. Even though holding slaves is a sin, I will not disregard the writings of godly people from the past, like JE, simply because they were guilty of the sin of their day. If I were to disregard every contribution Jonathan Edwards made to theology simply because he owned slaves, then I would be missing out on a great deal! Here's an example to give some perspective on being blinded by a common societal sin: I'm sure if people from the Puritans' day saw how we spend our Sundays (Sabbaths), they would be mortified.
I received a copy of the Jonathan Edwards Study Bible in Brown Leathersoft. This Bible is one of the best that I have seen in quite awhile Great insight to Jonathan Edwards. Thank you for posting this video and the Study Bible. I am a Baptist Pastor and Sunday School teacher.
Recently purchased the Jonathan Edwards Study Bible and I'm currently reading through his Religious Affections. It's only been a month or so since I've jumped into the world of JE but it's already been SO edifying. Thank you for your ministry, wealth of knowledge, and everything else you do Pastor Matt!
2:26 if you wouldn’t take a buIIet for a gay trans kid then love is also something you should be cultivating brother. Also, you’re underestimating Edwards’ philosophy tremendously. You said it yourself, the guy is a genius, so I wouldn’t write him off so hastily without the philosophical know how.
Hey Matthew. What do you think is the best Jonathan Edwards Biography? I've been wondering about this for a while and am excited to pick up one of them to read and learn more about him. I don't know much about him yet.
excellent intro sir!! thank you so much for this. I don't have the study bible yet but am hoping to get my hands on one asap! until then this was a super useful intro
I gave a friend a copy of Heaven is a World of Love by Edwards and she thought it wasn't very biblically based and that it was fantasy. I've read it several times and find it delightful and uplifting. What are your thoughts on my friend's opinion?
Pastor Matt, thank you for posting this video, and thank you for your work on the JE Study Bible! Edwards also deserves credit as an educator, across different age groups (pre-teens, young adults, college graduates seeking pastorates, and college seniors), females and males, and Native Americans as well as Anglo-colonials. Anyone who hasn't done so yet, please see the book To Understand Things as Well as Words: An Examination of Jonathan Edwards as an Educator and His Pedagogical Methodology.
A bit of a side topic, but I tried to read David Brainerd's diary and couldn't continue. He seemed like such a downer of a person, always lamenting how terrible he was. I don't mind some of that. We all sure can be terrible. But this was constant. Maybe it changes as the book goes on. But I just couldn't take anymore. Don't be such a mope!
28:50 Most of that stuff would be in his personal notebooks, which by the way, he did not intend for you to read.
But they were published anyway? Yikes! I'm not a fan of reading journals, diaries, letters, other personal writings unless the author had intended/approved it. Imagine someone publishing your most personal thoughts that you did not want anyone to see!
Double yikes on casually stating he had slaves but not elaborating. Have you done any videos on that specific issue?
I really want the Jonathan Edwards study bible but I spend most of my reading and memorization in the ESV. Do you know if they will ever release the study bible in ESV? Thanks for all the useful info.
I'm chugging thru "Freedom of the Will" right now, and it is an absolute slog. Thank you for confirming that it is not an easy read even for you. I was afraid that I am just dim! Thank you Dr. Everhard for your hard work in ministry. You are helping Baptist rubes like me all over the country.
Looking forward to receiving my Jonathan Edwards study Bible real soon. Thank you for all your work in the Church of Jesus Christ. I’m really looking forward to the years I get to read your books and listen to your sermons and all. You are the are one of the major theologians of our generation. And I know it’s not for you to make a name for yourself. It’s all glory be to Christ, and I do and many other men associate your name with sound biblical teaching and preaching.

If anyone would be First he must first become a slave.

Can you please explain the half-way covenant and Edwards position on it?

How long do you spend with one Study Bible?
Greatly enjoyed this Matthew. You should consider biographical videos on other prominent Reformed Theologians!
Do you anticipate the price of this Bible decreasing? Close to $50 for a hardcover?
We should call the "native americans" = "Siberian Americans"
