7:39… quoted from; Luke 18:11 "The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican"
The teaching is from 1888 and likely an effort to counter what was termed the 'downgrade'.
However, I think of Isaiah 64
Isaiah 64:6. "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away"
14:15…quoted from; Jeremiah 31:18¶" I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God"
One of my picks; Psalms 119:176 "I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments"
Always seek to set aside the valuations of the world, which seem wrong and try to judge only by those valuations, which seem right to you. Do not seek the praise and notice of the world. Be one of those who, though sometimes scoffed at, have a serenity and peace of mind, which the scoffers never know. Be one of that bands that feel the Divine Principle in the universe, though He be often rejected because He cannot be seen

24:57–25:15… " If we were called upon to select a man who, as to his life as a whole, perpetrated the greatest folly, we should mention Solomon. Yet he was the wisest of men. Yes, the cream of wisdom, when curdled, makes the worst of folly."
7 of 20 verses in KJV mentioning 'foolishness'. Possibly Spurgeon's using the word above, 'folly', compares with foolishness.
Mark 7:22 "Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:"
1 Corinthians 1:18 "For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

What is born of God is his Son's spirit , which we get when we put our faith in him. By identifying as this spirit, it will take over your thinking. When you die and your human mind ( flesh) goes to the grave awaiting judgment day and total elimination in gehinnom, this spirit from Christ goes back and indwells Christ. This is how we have eternal life by becoming a new creature with his likeness and his mind. 2Cor 12: 2-11 shows Paul experiencing this. He was executed by stoning, but was later resuscitated to tell of his experience. He was in Christ as a new creature with the mind of Christ. John 6:63" It is the spirit ( mind of Christ) that quickeneth; the flesh ( human) profiteth nothing: the words ( new creatures with his likeness and his mind) that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. " Again, God is not preserving or cleaning you up and making a new you, but rather a new him.
Galatians 1:23 "But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24 And they glorified God in me."
Paul, himself was a paradox
Paradox: a situation, person, or thing that combines contradictory features or qualities.
And what of the other 12 apostles?
I at times think Paul's thorn in the flesh was his at times reflecting on the Paul before 'conversion' and more than likely 'reteaching' and to use a modern term 'deprogramming'.
For myself, having been quite an extreme antagonist of religion it took some 'time' and 'guidance', very little of which was by any 'so called Christians' to 'realize' I needed God in my life.
In this, it is apparent to me that Paul's strong 'misguided' upbringing and my strong 'unguided' upbringing had similar effects.
See Isaiah 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things"
1 Corinthians 3:18 "Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise." 19. "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness."
