Who was Charles Finney?

Perhaps no figure casts his shadow over American evangelicalism more than Charles Finney. From one of our Ask Ligonier …

  1. While there are " doers of the word" others are critical of such " doers" and was brought up in Finney's Bible expositions and books. I can say " I'm what I am by the grace of God" but also edified by Finney's books and his life.
Forty years! By grace through faith upon Jesus.

  2. Could you provide more resources on Charles Finney, and ministry? I have heard many strange things about him, but this video was really short! Not very helpful.

  3. I live in Rochester, NY, and there is no semblance of large Christian faith in this city almost 200 years after Finney's great "revival." (In fact, just watched a video of many in the African-American community rioting and looting our city downtown.) True Christians are in the minority. While there are believers here, this city is secular and very liberal. Finney's methods were a "success" because he got many "decisions," but his theology was very questionable. He didn't even think a revival required God's supernatural power. Romans 1:16 tells us the gospel is the power of God unto salvation, but Finney changed that by thinking his method was the power. Sadly, his methods (or variations of it) is the norm of evangelism in the church today. Looking for "decisions" so we can count the "numbers."

  4. Isn't it fascinating to see this grand wee man pontificating critically on the life of one of the Lord's greatest soul winners with: 1/ A closed Bible. 2/ Nevertheless that same Bible prominently on display to generate a "religious atmosphere". 3/ No identification of who he is so that we can background him and check out how many souls he has influenced to become believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hmmm…

  5. If you go to some Indian village there are many people who do no more doctrine or something, they know christ and for that sake they even cast their lives, many martyred because for that sake…so don't see doctrine more than the lord jesus christ…some may differ in doctrine but true Christians love for christ never changes..it may be calvinist,Armenian,7th day Adventist,catholic,non-denominational etc..whatever maybe there is still people who had true desire for the God…when I study Charles Finney his prayer or his zeal it really challenges me…but many Christians backslide and give away to devil…but it's not his problem..in every denomination Christians are backsliden…so don't think that your doctrine is the only true….sorry if I'm wrong. And by grace we are saved from our sins even Finney believed so.

  6. Amen, but… Understanding this is just a very short clip, I believe it leaves too many things imprecisely explained, not acknowledging Ro. 10:14-15 where God uses the human element in preaching the word. And what about the obvious synergism between believer and Holy Spirit within, when it comes to progressive sanctification? When I don't study my bible and pray I slip backwards, so I have a duty in it. Yes, salvation is of the Lord—it's all His work, and yet what are the means He uses to accomplish His saving purposes? Thumbs up! And TY for adding yet another biography for me to read to my list that's already longer than a lifespan (sigh).

  7. Ignorant Calvinist running his ignorant mouth. It's the Calvinists that have a bad influence on non-Christians and Christians alike. Finney taught the truth. Calvinists are really stupid Pharisees

  8. I believe that in order for God to work in the lives of men, regenerate and unregenerate, there is a cooperative effort. I never have nor will I ever believe that God will save a man unless he repents and places faith in the finished work of Christ.
I assume this man is calvanistic or else he wouldnt have said this is "bad" theology. Unless I'm misunderstanding what he has said.
By the way. I believe that a lost preacher can preach the gospel and someone be saved under the word of God. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

  9. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.

    BUT….
John 6:44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    John 10:30
Jesus said, "I and the Father are one."

Jesus as God, working with God the Father as God, and the Holy Spirit as God are the ONLY ones doing the work. The gospel is the person and the work of Jesus Christ.

IF Charles Finney did any work, it would produce false converts.
Not sure why anyone would troll in Ligonier ministries.

  10. Romans 10:14

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

The preacher here choose to serve God. While we are saved by God alone, in the sense of the verse above, the seeking of the lost is a cooperative effort, in that God does hire free moral agents to carry out His plans.

Calvin would be very disappointed in his spiritual descendants as they have refused to reform. They are living 500 years ago and have never taken any steps of their own away from the Papacy. They have only walked as far out of Babylon as Calvin traveled. Unfortunately, the movement seem to hold most tenaciously to Calvin’s errors and ignore his strengths of character: Calvin was not a mere reflector of other men’s thoughts. I believe they do a great disservice to John Calvin and cause men to hate him.

God might have withheld the hand of Adam from touching the forbidden fruit; but in that case people would have been, not free moral agents, but mere automatons. Without freedom of choice, their obedience would not have been voluntary, but forced. There could have been no development of character.

Ultimately, the modern day Calvinist sustain Lucifer’s lie that spawned a war in heaven that God’s rule is arbitrary.

  11. Any preacher who has as great a success in conversions both in number and consistency like Finney will be disparaged by those jealous of his success. We've seen this jealousy and unfair/inaccurate criticism displayed in this video.

  12. "….cooperative effort both in the preaching and receiving…" Chapter and verse is Phil 2:12,13 e, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Couldn't explain this cooperation better if Paul tried. Finney was spot on.

  13. It's sat to hear so called knowledgeable people comment on Finney, while it is quite obvious they have never read his works! I think it reflects the standard of intellect today. Is this the level of study they apply to the word of God?

  14. 🕆 1 Timothy 6:11-12 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.🕆

Let the Holy Spirit guide you this week according to these 2 verses from the bible, Let God’s Peace and Grace be with you (To The Reader). Praise God always. Amen,.. 🕆🙏🙌

  15. Charles G. Finney was the best Presbyterian ever! And he wasn’t the only Presbyterian who led the holiness movement, Albert Barnes was another. The next great revival will be a return to Finney’s theology and a rejection of the false gospel of the “doctrines of grace”.
