I am Indonesian raised in an ancestral worshipping Chinese family but I was schooled in Christian schools. I received Jesus outside Indonesia, but the seeds were planted in Indonesia. I thank Morillo ministry for sowing seeds, abundant seeds in Indonesia. We have fast-growing churches in the nation, even among the other religions, many people are coming to Christ.
The genesis of the Jakarta 1979 crusade began with the first crusades on other islands in Indonesia years before this one. Pastor Nicky Sumual had worked with Morris on all those. During 1979 School of Ministry in San Diego, Nicky came to San Diego to meet with Morris. The national government of Indonesia passed a law making it illegal for anyone to change the religion they were born into. Nicky wanted Morris to come to Jakarta before 1979 was finished and conduct a public crusade in the national stadium in open defiance of that law. Many of the men who had worked Morris in previous crusades banded together and sent Nicky with this plea for Morris come and break the power of Islam over Jakarta, the national capital. They were prepared to face jail and death to do this. Morris Cerullo accepted the invitation for October 1979. Morris said, “You need to leave immediately and start laying the groundwork.” At the time I was the international crusade director. I returned to Jakarta with Nicky. We had only 4-5 months to do what we usually worked on a year in advance.
A police general, Gen Medellu, was our chairman, Nicky Sumual was over mobilizing all the pastors. Dr Pieter a bank president in government Import-Export Bank was our finance chairman, a Bible school director, Benny Gerungan, was in charge of the one week School of Ministry with over 2000 pastors and workers attending. Sam Daniels, a businessman of Indian descent, was a great assist to the committee. Miraculously, we secured all the necessary permits. By the 2nd night, the police estimated 250,000 plus were in attendance. People filled soccer field, the seats, and gathered out side in the parking lot. We put up loudspeakers.
After that 2nd night the army sent in troops to lock down every gate and told us the meetings were canceled. A group from the School of Ministry gathered to pray. Morris met with Army commander and informed him he would submit to their authority BUT that he would go to the stadium and the army soldiers would have to arrest him. The commander asked “why do that?” Morris responded, “ Twice as many people will be out tonight. I want all the people to see that you, sir, the army commander, is the man responsible stopping the Gospel from being preached and people from being prayed for.”
You could see the commander never thought of this and he did not have enough troops available to face 400,000-600,000 people hungry to hear the Gospel.
Long story short, the VP of the nation ordered the commander to stand down and allow the crusade to go on as planned. It was too late for the commander to remove his troops so we asked him if he would keep his troops in place and assist in security for the night. We had soldiers bringing testimonies to the platform.
On the last night, Morris did not preach, a national pastor preached. There were miracles and salvations the last night.
The rest, as they say, was history. The government never tried to enforce that anti conversion law and the work of the Gospel advanced greatly.

From the beginning to the end there miracles every step of the way. The Indonesian brothers who organized that crusade were awesome, fearless, dedicated to seeing their nation liberated from Islam. 45 years later, fruit still remains.
