  1. Now, a final word about doubt itself.

Because doubt has been a persistent companion on this road. And I want to make peace between you and it before we go any further. Doubt is not the opposite of faith. That is the misunderstanding that causes people the most unnecessary suffering in their spiritual lives. Faith's opposite is not doubt. Faith's opposite is certainty. Because certainty needs nothing. Certainty does not require trust. Certainty simply knows what it knows and operates on that basis. Trust, real trust. Trust that sustains a relationship and costs you something and grows you into the person you're becoming. Trust operates in the presence of uncertainty. It coexists with the not knowing. It chooses to lean on me not because all the questions have been answered, but because I am trustworthy even in the presence of unanswered questions. Doubt is part of that space. The person who has no doubts is usually the person who has not been tested. Real doubt is what happens when a person that genuinely believes encounters a trial that makes believing feel hard. It is not the condition of a faithless person. It is often the condition of a very faithful person who is going through a trial that is too large and too long and too unanswered to fit neatly into simple faith. When you have doubted, you have not been unfaithful. You have been human. And you have been faithful in the way that counts most, by staying. By continuing to bring yourself to me even when you were not sure what you believed. By choosing the relationship even when the relationship was confusing. By keeping the door between us open even when you wanted to close it. That is faith. The staying type. And it is the type I treasure most.

    Amen.
