Who says I can't worship God and get paid at the same time? Have you not read 1 Corinthians 9?
Even in secular jobs, money shouldn't be put upfront. Service to God and humanity should be the first priority. Nevertheless, money is important because everyone has bills to pay.
Good parents pay their children when it comes to their professional skills, not in basic skills like cleaning, mopping, etc. I own a music studio, if my parents need my professional work at some point, they'd pay for it. I'll give it free to them at my own discretion. Guess what! They will never even ask me to do it for free. My brother is a business man; one of his businesses is making shawarma, my parents always pay him to make for them. All these are because these are our professions. It's beyond cleaning and sweeping. If we were professional cleaners, we would also be paid for doing it, like Laundry.
Same thing in the church, anybody can sweep, anybody can clean, anybody can usher but not anybody can play the musical instrument. No matter how much you want to serve in that capacity, you can't just wake up and play. There's a process to it, that's why it's professional and requires payment. Even in the media department, you have to take time and learn the craft before you start working. So payments are important. If you must be paid, be professional!
People always make it seem like Music is just once a week or few times a week. Do you know what it takes to score a song, especially a complex song? A lot of musicians even compose theirs. It takes a lot of brain work. You will choke yourself trying to do this alongside your secular 9-5 job, except your church doesn't want or appreciate good music. I wonder what kind of church that is though. 1 Chronicles 23-25 tells us how David picked professional musicians. You will have no idea how important professional music is until someone sings offkey and distracts your worship.
