This is a truth that we all need to accept, everyone is born to die. As Christians we would preface that with 'thanks to the Fall' however all people would have to agree that it is not only the normal but the inevitable course of events. Our unwillingness to think of these things is not helped by the fact that the last three or so generations have lived in an abnormal time. In Edwards' time (and in fact until the 1930s) early death from infection particularly, but also violence and accidental trauma were much more common. Also a society living much closer to the soil not only saw life and death in nature, but used life and death of domesticated animals to survive. As a society 'The West' has lost sight of Death to great detriment both within and without the Church.
Occasional reflection on our eventual death can be profitable for sure. But when you do actually face death as I did due to a brain tumour it has a permanent effect upon your walk with God.
Great reminder, Matt. Thank you, brother for this reminder. I was thinking about the Titan accident and Psalm 90:12 came to my mind, "So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom." Life is very fragile, finite, and fleeting. As James would write in his epistle that our life is but a vapor or breath. This life will soon be over and then eternal life either in Heaven or Hell. Today is the day of salvation.
You mean, "How Jesus SAVED sinners (because his work fulfilled our salvation without extra works that we think we have to complete on our own, which is complete trash theology and not at all GOOD NEWS)." The definition of grace is β unmerited favor, something that does not require our interaction, otherwise it wouldn't be grace to begin with. Just some food for thought. These limitations that conservatives place on Jesus Christ need to stop, like yesterday. I'll mention it one more time. Where in 1 Timothy 2:4 is there any small hint of exclusion There is none!)?! Let's read it again. I'll use the KJV and the NKJV for popular appeal, then from the Concordant Literal New Testament translation:
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. KJV (pretty straight forward!) Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. NKJV (Still, fairly straight forward, as this is GOD desiring it) Who wills that all mankind be saved and come into a realization of the truth. CLNT (Where on earth does ALL not mean ALL?!)
By the way, 1Timothy 1-7 all reinforce the salvation of all. You might want to take a looksy!
Is this too much for you guys?! God forbid that ALL actually means ALL!!! This is terrible for those of you who "earned" your own salvation!!! This is the GOSPEL, folks!! Know it, understand it, and BELIEVE IT!!!!
Thank you. The question about how I would have dealt with the situation and what type of person I would have been in the sub is definitely something I have reflected on throughout the coverage of this tragedy. It has brought me back to the strength of the Christian truth.
Just turned 53. I think of death all the time. Also think about possible disabling health problems. On some level I really admire your friends mind set. I just canβt do that
I can't be the only one who honestly looks forward to their death because it is like Paul says "to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord". But while I am not afraid of death because of the finished work of Christ and my redemption in Him, I AM a little more nervous about HOW we may die. Some are blessed with dying in their sleep and others in horrendous methods determined by God from before the foundation of the world.
Amen, my brother. π€βπ

I love seeing Pastors address real world problems, situations and ocurrences from a Biblical perspective.
Think I have this one nailed down π .

I think of my own deathβ¦.and sends me in a depressive spiral. Realize how much of a failure I am.

Wise words. Thank you brother.
