The Christian Film Industry is truly awful and is something I’ve wanted to talk about for a very long time. From the manipulative …

  1. The surreal thing to me about God's Not Dead is it centers around this scripted intellectual battle between two fictional characters, and people watch it to see their side 'win.' At the time it came out, I had watched a good dozen or more actual theist vs. atheist debates, and there was an abject naivety and cowardice to me that a large swath of people would rather watch that movie. But hell, at least that movie acknowledges the concept of debate. Most of the rest of them don't even seem to have that pretense.

  2. There are really 2 main subgenres. You've described the David A.R. White oppression genre, but there's also the Kendrick brothers forgiving your shitty Dad who found Jesus genre.

  3. Usually, the problem with "Christian entertainment" is that the producers focus solely on the "Christian" part, and kinda ignore the "entertainment" part.

Also, the "middle aged white woman" at 0:48… you chose that particular middle aged conservative Christian white woman intentionally, didn't you? Little Easter egg, I guess. 🙂

  4. If that thing called god is nice than I wouldn’t be alone I wouldn’t cry I wouldn’t try to suicide for the shitty things and mainstreams there is now
Thank you Andrew your videos motivate me
Big love from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

  5. As a kid in the early 2000’s who had to watch this shit in religion class, thanks for putting the things I felt into words. Most of these films feel like Hallmark movies with a “Christian” filter put over them lol

  6. You would think the Black Representation would be considered progressive, but seeing they only take a token role for expressing an Innuendo compared to the majority Anglo characters who just don't, is ironically low-key racist. It's as if they see the more exotic races as being inherently licentious.

  7. Let's face it: Jews make better movies than Christians. I'm talking about you: Adolph Zukor, Samuel Goldwyn, Louis B. Mayer, David O. Selznik, Steven Spielberg. For one thing Jewish producers are not prejudiced against gay costume designers, gay set designers, gay screenwriters, gay actors and lesbian actresses. Jews seem to understand that LGBT+ people bring brilliance to the performing arts.

  8. The angle I find fascinating is they are marketed like if you see these movies you are giving the finger to big Hollywood. Sad thing is you are just lining a white conservative dudes wallet instead.

  9. I think the Christian movie industry has some problems as any other one, and yes there are a lot of bad movies but there are also good ones. I wached several with amazing stories and great productions such as "Saving private Ryan","The shack", "I still believe", "Hacksaw Ridge", the classic "Chronicles of Narnia" and so many others. But I agree that this is an area that needs more professionals to work in.

  10. God's not dead 4 came out recently. Has anyone here watched it? I mean, if it is entertaining like the first one and perjaps the second too, I will watch it. But if it was as lame as the third, I'm not in. Opinions?

  11. The only Christian movie I have seen where the protagonist dies is 2025, because the pervert who made it wanted his character to be Jesus. Not even joking, it's a borderline ripoff of Jesus Christ Superstar.

  12. I am a devout Christian, and I don't watch "Christian" movies. I go to church to hear sermons, and my pastor is more entertaining and less preachy than all PureFlix productions. I go to the movie theater to watch movies — stories — and I expect quality and variety. I've actually watched more Marvel movies than Christian movies. And whenever I watch a movie and there's explicit content, I just fast-forward the scene. That's what the button on your remote is there for. It's hilarious to think that there are messages in movies like Iron Man and How To Train Your Dragon, which deal with themes like responsibility and not judging a book by it's cover, that are closer to what the Christian faith teaches than many Christian movies. Also, Christian movies don't have dragons, epic battles, or Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Why do Christian movies have to center on this one plot and one genre of people defending their faith or praying more? Most people never have to defend their faith. Where are all the Christian space operas, historical dramas, parodies, simple real-world stories?

A big exception I can think of to the Christian genre is Soul Surfer, the story of Bethany Hamilton. I love that movie. The main character is a Christian and everyone around her are Christians, and at one part she even goes on a mission trip. But the story felt genuine and grounded, and it dealt with some very difficult subjects that are key to the Christian faith. But it's also a story about surfing, and overcoming obstacles, and dealing with a disability.

  13. How does this not have way more views? Lol – my wife wanted to try out Pureflix during covid and we tried maybe 3 or 4 movies which all sucked. Canceled our sub that day. I was willing to give Christian movies/shows another chance since my years as a pastor's kid but holy crap it sucks.

  14. I agree with all of this. Growing up as a pastors kid, I’ve unfortunately witnessed a lot of Christian media over the years and a lot of it is unwatchable garbage. There is however a great Christian production company here in GA called Whitestone Motion Pictures that produces quality Christian media.

  15. You should be a part-time guest on the "God Awful Movies" podcast. Your knowledge of Christian movie tropes is amazing. There really is nothing as awful as an explicitly "Christian" movie.
