  1. Notes: SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES – DR. AROME OSAYI

    Introduction
    Theme:
The importance of developing spiritual strength through prayer and exercising the human spirit to lift burdens, overcome limitations, and walk in dominion.

    Key Scriptures:
Genesis 13:14-15 – "Lift up now thine eyes… for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it."
2 Samuel 22:4-16 – The impact of prayer on spiritual realities.
John 20:21-22 – Jesus breathed on His disciples, imparting the Holy Spirit.
Romans 6:11 – "Reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Isaiah 11:2-3 – The Spirit of wisdom, understanding, and might.
Proverbs 18:14 – "The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit who can bear?"
    Purpose:
To teach believers how to build their spiritual strength, engage in spiritual warfare, and exercise their dominion through prayer and intimacy with God.

    Main Teachings
    1. The Concept of Spiritual Weightlifting
Just as physical strength is built in the gym, spiritual capacity is developed through consistent spiritual exercises.
Jesus demonstrated the ability to lift spiritual burdens through His intimate relationship with the Father.
The level of impact a believer has is determined by the strength of the activity of God upon their spirit.
Question for reflection: What can your prayer do?
    2. The Role of Prayer in Exercising Spiritual Strength
Prayer is not just communication with God but an exercise that builds spiritual weightlifting capacity.
The only way to measure your spiritual strength is by taking on spiritual challenges.
Jesus' disciples failed to cast out a demon because they lacked the spiritual weight to shift that reality (Matthew 17:14-21).
Practical Exercise: Engage in intercessory prayer for others and monitor the impact of your prayers over time.
    3. The Two Dimensions of Divine Breath
    A. The Breath of Life (Genesis 2:7)
    Made Adam a living soul.
Gave natural life and intelligence but limited man to the physical realm.
Did not provide dominion over spiritual realities.
    B. The Breath of the Holy Spirit (John 20:22)
Imparted divine life, activating spiritual function.
Enabled believers to exercise dominion in the supernatural realm.
    Provided authority over demonic forces.
    Key Insight:

The first breath made man alive; the second breath empowered man for dominion.
A believer who operates only in the natural is at risk of being controlled by the enemy.
    4. The Spirit’s Role in Carrying Burdens (Proverbs 18:14)
A strong spirit sustains a person in times of affliction.
Many believers are spiritually weak because they do not engage in consistent spiritual exercise.
God often does not change situations immediately but strengthens us to overcome them.
Illustration: Just as a child cannot carry their father, but a father can carry their child, the human spirit is designed to carry burdens when strengthened.
    5. Overcoming Resistance in the Spirit
The enemy attacks believers by manipulating emotions and planting thoughts of discouragement.
    Spiritual resistance often manifests as:
    Feelings of heaviness and depression.
Sudden loss of motivation to pray.
Doubt and confusion regarding God's promises.
Strategy: Equip yourself with the Word of God and respond to the enemy’s lies with scriptural truth (Jeremiah 29:11).
    6. Moving from Information to Experience
Many believers only know about God intellectually but lack experiential knowledge.
True authority comes from encounters with God, not just scriptural memorisation.
    Comparison of Spiritual Growth Stages:
Hearing of God (Job 42:5) – Informational knowledge.
Seeing God (Job 42:5) – Experiential knowledge.
Handling the reality of God (1 John 1:1-3) – Transformational knowledge.
Illustration: A person who only studies swimming theory but never enters water has no real experience of swimming.
    7. Seeking the Face of God – A Spiritual Discipline
Seeking God’s face is the highest form of spiritual engagement.
It is not just asking for things but pressing into His presence to understand His will.
Psalms 105:4 – "Seek the Lord and his strength: seek his face evermore."
Psalms 27:8 – "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek."
Seeking God’s face requires discipline, consistency, and faith.
    Illustrations and Examples
    David’s Victory through Prayer (2 Samuel 22:4-16)

When David called upon God, divine interventions followed.
Prayer moves spiritual realities before physical circumstances change.
Apostle Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh (2 Corinthians 12:6-9)

Paul had a personal affliction that God did not remove but gave him grace to endure.
Not all challenges are meant to be removed; some are meant to build endurance.
Jesus' Example in Wilderness Warfare (Luke 4:1-14)

Jesus overcame Satan by engaging in spiritual exercises (fasting, prayer, the Word).
His victory in the wilderness preceded His authority in public ministry.
    Practical Applications
    Develop a Consistent Prayer Routine

Set aside daily time to pray beyond mere requests—seek God's presence.
Engage in prolonged prayer sessions to strengthen your spirit.
    Exercise Faith in Difficult Situations

Instead of waiting for problems to disappear, grow your spirit to handle them.
Take on spiritual challenges to test and expand your faith.
    Guard Your Heart and Mind

Recognise when the enemy is manipulating your thoughts and emotions.
Counter lies with scriptural truth and affirmations of faith.
Take Responsibility for Your Spiritual Growth

Just as no one can exercise for you, no one can build your spiritual strength for you.
Make a personal commitment to spiritual discipline.
    Key Takeaways
Prayer is spiritual weightlifting—developing your capacity in the spirit.
The effectiveness of your prayers depends on the activity of God on your spirit.
The Holy Spirit is given to believers not just for comfort but for dominion.
Spiritual burdens can be lifted through a strengthened spirit, just as physical burdens require muscle strength.
True victory is not in escaping challenges but in overcoming them by exercising spiritual authority.
Seeking God's face is the highest form of spiritual engagement and leads to divine encounters.
    Conclusion
The strength of your spirit determines your capacity to handle life's challenges. Just as physical fitness requires consistent training, spiritual fitness requires regular exercises in prayer, fasting, and seeking God.

    Challenge:

This week, set a target to engage in deep prayer and fasting.
Ask God for the grace to grow in spiritual strength and take on new challenges.
Monitor the results and journal your spiritual growth.
May the Lord strengthen you with might in your inner man as you exercise your spirit for dominion!
