It honestly feels like Gabby never got any true support from her own folks like other Black athletes did when they win.
With her, her win was always tainted by people talking about her hair to the point that Dominique Dawes had to defend it on ESPN and Oprah had to ask her how she felt about the backlash. With Simone, folks in the media are also partially trying to erase Gabby from the conversation by making it seem like Gabby wasn't the first Black woman or even the first POC to get the all-around medal in gymnastics. Basically, the same thing they did when Andy Murray won and he had to promptly tell the reporter that Serena and Venus were the ish before him. Yet, Simone is just sitting their basking in the glory and not correcting anyone about Gabby or Dominique Dawes' roe in making it possible for her to stand where she's standing now. She's even gone so far to remind folks that she just wants to be seen as an "athlete" and not a "Black athlete" who was the first, which would be cute if this was a utopian world, but makes me sideeye her hella hard. Love her Simone, but I wish folks would put some respeck on Gabby's name like they do everyone else's.
