FAIRNESS: ANTIDOTE AGAINST FRAUD AND FALSEHOOD
TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 19:1-20.
1. Fairness in Justice
a. The essence of justice is just fairness to all in such a way that innocence is rewarded and encouraged, while evil is discouraged and punished.
COMMENT:
I'VE NOTICED THAT IN OUR CHURCH, THINGS DON'T ALWAYS PLAY OUT FAIRLY WHEN IT COMES TO DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS AGAINST PASTORS. THERE SEEMS TO BE A GROWING NUMBER OF SUBORDINATES (Korah, Dathan, Abiram) WHO RESIST DIRECTION FROM THEIR LEADERS, KNOWING THAT WRITING COMPLAINTS CAN LEAD TO THE PASTOR BEING DISCIPLINED AND EVENTUALLY TRANSFERRED. HOW CAN WE EXPECT GENUINE GROWTH WHEN THOSE WHO DO WRONG AREN’T HELD ACCOUNTABLE? THEY CONTINUE TO THRIVE IN THE CHURCH BECAUSE THEY AREN'T OPENLY CORRECTED.
GOD IS INHERENTLY JUST, AND HIS NATURE EMBODIES FAIRNESS, AS HIGHLIGHTED IN JEREMIAH 9:24. IT'S THIS FAIRNESS THAT SHIELDS HIM FROM BLAME, EVEN FROM HIS CRITICS.
WHAT ROLE DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT PLAY IN DISCIPLINING A LEADER? DO WE TRULY SEEK GOD’S GUIDANCE TO VERIFY THE TRUTH BEHIND ACCUSATIONS? MANY LEADERS WHO HAVE FACED DISCIPLINE OFTEN HAVEN’T COMMITTED OUTRIGHT SINS. IF A LEADER IS DISCIPLINED FOR ADMINISTRATIVE ERRORS, THEY SHOULD BE GUIDED TOWARD IMPROVEMENT RATHER THAN SUBJECTED TO PROLONGED PUNISHMENT. WHEN WE LET DISCIPLINE DRAG ON FOR MONTHS—SOME CASES OVER A YEAR—WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? DOES IT SUGGEST THAT THE GOD THEY WERE PRAYING TO DIDN’T HEAR THEM? WHY ELSE WOULD IT TAKE SO LONG TO RESOLVE THE SITUATION?
Falsehood Judged
a. Following closely the sin of fraud is falsehood….The first principle is that you don't rely on only one witness. It may lead to miscarriage or misplacement of justice.
COMMENT:
*HOW MANY TIMES DO WE REINVESTIGATE A CASE EVEN WHEN THE LEADER SAID HE DID NOT DO SUCH.
*HOW TRUE IS THE REPORT OF THE PERSON SENT TO INVESTIGATE A MATTER.
*IS THERE A RIFT BTW THE INVESTIGATOR AND THE INVESTIGATED, HOW CAN THERE BE A HONEST REPORT?
A lone person may be mischievous, deceived or has problems with seeing issues appropriately and comprehensively. The essence of having more than one witness is to make sure that a thorough and unbiased investigation is made in order to ascertain the truth. Falsehood will lead to error in judgment which may totally destroy the morale, destiny and life of many contrary to the will of God. So "the judges shall make diligent inquisition" and make sure that the testimonies of the witnesses are validated or authenticated.
COMMENT:
IN ALL HONESTY, MOST LEADERS WHO HAVE FACED DISCIPLINE AND HAVE BEEN RESTORED—OFTEN WITHOUT HAVING ACTUALLY SINNED BUT STILL ACCUSED—TEND TO LOSE THE MOMENTUM THEY ONCE HAD IN STANDING UP AGAINST WRONGDOING. THEY BECOME EXTRA CAUTIOUS, FEARING THEY MIGHT FACE DISCIPLINE AGAIN.
JESUS PRAYED FOR PETER EVEN AFTER HE DENIED HIM, CHOOSING NOT TO DISCIPLINE HIM AS WE OFTEN DO. IT’S TIME FOR US TO REFLECT AND RECONSIDER HOW WE HANDLE THOSE WHO BRING PETITIONS IN THE CHURCH. IT TOOK ONLY THE THREE (KORAH, DATHAN, ABIRAM) TO STAND UP AGAINST MOSES BUT SINCE THEY WERE LEFT ALONE WHEN GOD MOVED, SO MANY PEOPLE DIED, NOT JUST THE THREE.
WE SHOULD ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE US IN ALL MATTERS AND LET HIS DIRECTION LEAD THE WAY. THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOULD BE CONSULTED IN DETERMINING WHETHER A PASTOR IS TO BE DISCIPLINED AFTER THESE EVIL MEN SENT THEIR PETITION. ALSO, ENTERTAINING THE PETITIONS GIVES THEM THE LICENCE TO KEEP WRITING, STANDING AGAINST THE UPRIGHT LEADERS IN THE CHURCH. WE SHOULD WEAKEN THE HANDS OF THE UPRIGHT LEADERS BY INCESASANT DISCIPLINES.
Amen
