  1. Obayashi's backstory reminds me of Kinji Fukasaku, the director of Battle Royale. He was a teenager who worked in a munitions factory during the latter part of the war and had to hide under the dead bodies of his coworkers during American bombing raids. So yeah, the theme of youths both being abandoned and exploited by the adult world is very palpable in his work

  2. As someone who’s one fear is glitter, that was disgusting to me. It already can’t get off your god damn skin, and there’ll be STUFF THAT WILL ALWAYS BE INSIDE OF YOU.

If you wanna torture me, put glitter in my eyes, make me take glitter pills, gold me in a glitter room where the walls easily chip off. That’s my genuine nightmare OTHER THAN watching all the people I care about be brutally murdered in front of me.

  3. A great video, sir!
I love Hausu with all my heart and it might just be my favourite movie of all time.
Just for the very simple matter that watching it made me feel like no other movie before or since.

  4. I have never seen any of Obayashi movies, but looking at the footage now I gotta admit – I see many similarities to Sam Raimi's style – especialy Evil Dead 2:
    crazy moving/possesed cupboards and clocks
    crazy severed head

shots with flying objects mouted next to the camera (here it's a piece from chandelier, in ED2 it's an eyeball flying and landing in a girl's mouth – btw, in this video we also have a girll with an eyeball in her mouth)
fountains of blood flushing from the walls

cheesy bluescreen and animation (also can be seen in in Darkman or Army of Darkness)

Have to say, I don't think it's a coincidence – Sam Raimi must have seen this movie prior to making Evil Dead 2…

  5. The spontaneity and scattered topics of this channel are perhaps my favorite things about it. These aren’t video essays about something that has been sought out or is popular. These are love letters to the passions and interests of one person, and that is something you won’t find elsewhere.

  6. The part about how jarring and strange our childhood fears are really hit home! I used to run and long jump onto my bed because I was afraid something underneath would grab my ankles! It also reminds me of the scene in The Shining (the book) where Danny is about to walk past that emergency fire hose and the it comes to life and behaves like a snake!

  7. I just realized that I've seen parts of this film on TV when I was about 6 years old. That scene at the well traumatized me for a long time. I forgot all about this until I stumbled upon this youtube video.

  8. Haha, I immediately thought some of our fears as children weren't so absurd, but as soon as you said his daughters fears weren't the only ones he drew inspiration from that thought shut the hell up and I couldn't help but imagine the worst… and sure enough.
