Genesis 1:26 is a prophetic language. God is already including the then future Christ in His plan to make man in His own image.
God is still creating/working on man until this day, because we are not yet fully transformed in His own image.
We are not perfect yet, but when we are already in Heaven in a glorified body, then that will only be the time that the Creation of Man is finally complete (in His own image).
Only the male is made in God's image. Genesis appears to say that both male and female are made in God,'s image. But the apostle Paul qualifies what is meant when he says that the male is in God's image-or once was- but that the woman is in the image of the male. Could “US” mean God created man knowing man will reproduce through intercourse. So the US might refer to us his creation. Man produces mankind in our image and likeness. Forgive me if am wrong. Just seeking understanding.

Image in Hebrew actually means shade or phantom or a shadow. Our image means we are made a 3 part being a copy of God or His shadow. Hebrews 9:23-24. Says what on earth is a copy of what is in heaven referring to Jesus.
We are after all in a type of matrix shadow world here. And we are being awakened from dark to light. By taking Jesus Blood the red pill

In verse 27 its explained well how God created them. Image is not spiritual its physical meaning that God created the two human beings in one body so that the Man can appear in two forms either as a male or female just as God also appears either as The Father, or The Son or The Holy Spirit The three in one and that's exactly what the scripture is explaining in verse 27. Likeness of God is now the Spiritual part because God is a Spirit as we were told by Christ in John 4 and that's exactly what Genesis is talking about that we are spiritual beings. If you have the Holy Spirit understanding the scriptures becomes very easy.
