Fenny-ism Truly a democratic religion . Mass church programs, wide-gate gospels, and rhythmic music with melodies of "just as I am" for 10 minutes straight can produce a hypotic effect on masses. Read 'God Sent Revival' The story of Asahel Nettleton by J F Thornbury. Nettleton was a contemporary of Finney. Nettleton was an itinerant evangelist with Edward's theology. The two men did meet as recounted in this book.
Both Edward and Finney are correct when it comes to revival; each of them only saw a piece of the whole truth, because revelation is progressive.
Revival is a miracle; this is true because it is God that brings revival. Revival depends on the right use of constituted means. This is also true. The question is what are the constituted means? They are preaching and teaching of the word of God, effectual fervent prayer of the righteous. In the history of spiritual revivals in the church, years of prayer always went before. Also, revivals that do not involve thorough teaching of God's word in biblical discipleship, don't last. Divinely constituted means (means of grace) are essential for true and lasting revival
Salvation is a miracle but there are divinely constituted means to bring about this. Revealing this divinely constituted means, the Lord Jesus said, go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creatures, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Go and make disciples of all nations. If the Church sits indoors and folds her hands, salvation will not miraculously happen to people
You do not seem to understand the purpose of the "altar call". It fulfills two purposes: partly it is to fulfill the requirement of confessing your belief publicly, and partly to allow mature Christians to counsel new converts.
Most Christians are taught the Bible from an Arminian theological perspective (i.e., a false doctrine espoused by Jacobus Arminius in the 16th century). Arminianism was resurrected and became the predominant view in the Church in the early 20th century, largely due to the influence of the “social gospel” (a false gospel based on humanistic ideology) and “pragmatism” (a man-centered approach toward evangelism) popularized by Charles Finney, a heretic who promoted Pelagianism (i.e., salvation by works) and denied the cardinal tenets of original sin, Christ’s substitutionary atonement, and even justification by faith alone (cf. Finney’s Systematic Theology). Accordingly, most believers today are not aware that what is called Calvinism or Reformed Theology today was actually the majority and primary view within the Church before the 20th century. A perusal of historical church documents demonstrates this fact (cf. London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689, Westminster Confession of Faith, Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession, Canons of Dort, Philip Schaff’s History of the Christian Church, etc.). When Roman Catholicism dominated the Church during the Dark Ages, these vital truths (e.g., God’s sovereignty, innate human depravity, election/predestination, etc.), along with the essential (and inextricably linked and related) truths of Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, and Sola Scriptura (i.e., justification by grace alone through faith in Christ alone, reliance on Scripture alone), were concealed and not recovered until the Reformation in the 16th century headed by Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, etc. For almost three centuries, the truth (i.e. the Doctrines of Grace) prevailed in the Church until the Church began to abandon “the old paths” of Reformed Theology in the late 19th century (cf. the “downgrade” controversy, in which Spurgeon warned the Church about its turning away from the truth – a God-centered theology – to a man-centered theology). If you doubt these things, may I challenge you to study Church history in regards to these matters to ascertain the truth for yourself. Unfortunately, much of what is taught in the Church today regarding this subject is inaccurate and very biased. Based on past experience, I have discovered that it is absolutely critical to research things ourselves, in imitation of the Bereans in the book of Acts – especially today. That is, we should be cautious and not just automatically believe what we’re told in the modern Church, even by renowned speakers or what we consider trusted sources. Though Calvinism or Reformed Theology is certainly not popular today, which is not surprising, considering the times in which we live (e.g., an age of apostasy), may I encourage you to at least consider the claims of Calvinism without prejudice and carefully evaluate the evidence before assuming that it is unbiblical (based on others’ biased opinions and hearsay rather than on facts).
this is not a "debate" nor an objective look at two different sides; it is a "plug" for Reformed Theology and a dispersion-casting against those who disagree Examples: for markers 3-5, YES there are churches who point back to a moment of decision as a likely (but God only knows) point of conversion, but does emphasize the need for ongoing evaluation to "examine yourself to see if you are in the faith": and "make your calling and election sure", so the generalization given is not really so. I would hope that in an Edwards-based church the people there do not discount a conversion experience, as our assessment of current evidence is flawed. And "emotional pressure" and "manufactured urgency"? Did Paul and Peter use "emotional pressure" and "manufactured urgency" when they called people to repent and believe? I read my Bible, and it seems that those on the Finney side preach like Paul and Peter; do you condemn their preaching in Acts? Now is the day of salvation. Save yourselves from this wicked generation. Sounds good to me!
Lastly, it is FALSE to say, at the end, that the Finney method denies God saves and puts the onus on the preacher to put pressure on the audience. PLEASE!
The main conflict is between Reform (Calvinism) and Wesleyan (Arminianism). The real question for any Christian is do you remember the change at conversion? I do and that was over 60 years ago. There are too many scriptures to be listed here.
This is all a waste of time to debate such things from an Edwards perspective. No amount of Finney methods would keep the elect from being saved. Come on live by your doctrines! The elect will be saved period! So what if God used Finney to do it.
What hypocrisy, go to half a dozen Calvinistic churches that NOQW accept any lifestyle and you'll see how far the Presbyterian church of Jonathan Edwards has drifted from! Yet this person thinks that only Calvinists are chosen and saved!
"In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight." (Luke 10:21 kjv)
The problem is that people are looking at themselves to try to determine if God saved them, instead of believing what He said, and resting in His promise to save those that believe. If what Edward's believed is true, then false conversions are irrelevant, because was going to save His "elect" anyway, even if they were at one time a false convert. Why would he care if the unelected thought they were saved? They were damned anyway! And God determined them to be that way.
3:47 "… nothing supernatural happened at all." You're kidding me aren't you? When Finney preached people fell out of their seats cf. George Whitfield. And people fell under conviction.
For the eyes of the Lord roam to and from over all the earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose HEARTS are fully devoted to Him. Jhn 15:10
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just AS I have kept my Father’s commandments and ABIDE in His LOVE.
Great video, thank you!! Obedience to Jesus and His teachings and commands is a vital indicator of true conversation and love for Jesus: John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
John 14:24 “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.
Calvin's version of Christianity – you can tell by the contradictions – 1. Total Depravity of Man – Augustine and by default Calvin believed that we are dead corpses in a morgue incapable of any motion of good or response at all. This video contradicts this by telling false Christians to "love Jesus the right way!!!! and stop loving Him the wrong way!!!" If the unbeliever is dead as Calvin/Augustine said – they would have no control whatsoever over loving Jesus with pure motives or false ones. The truth is, believers are dead in sin and trespasses but that is a death of relationship to the Father and if they die in that state they are eternally separated from Him. God gives us responsibility – i.e. we are "able to make a response" and when we put our faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sin, He then saves us, not us nor our "faith" nor our "repentance" but Jesus saves us and we are all immature in Christ so our hearts intentions will be judged by the Holy Spirit and made plain to us so that we can put off the old manner of thinking, speaking and behaving and put on Christ instead – that is called "sanctification" and it is a lifelong process – no one is perfect at the point of conversion.
The “new birth” – regeneration – is not by blood, nor of the will of man, but by the Holy Spirt”. Regeneration – caused by the Holy Spirit – gives one “eyes to see and ears to hear” the Gospel. As an evangelist, I give out the gospel – repent and believe in Christ alone – and it is up to the Holy Spirit to make alive the recipient. I do my responsibility; it is up to God to cause the recipient to trust in Jesus.
Billy Sunday was an actor/manipulator. Those converts of his were called by pastors “Sunday converts”. They would emotionally believe, but few had lasting “conversions”. Think of it this way, many who claim to have the free ticket to heaven where no changed life results, is like one who was inoculated with a fall gospel. When they are exposed to the true Gospel, because they were inoculated with a false Gospel, they reject it because of the “vaccination” the accepted.
This is all wrong. Finney has been totally misrepresented. He never taught the social gospel. He taught the law and used it to bring people to a conviction. I have read the part where he said that revival is not a super natural occurrence and he goes on to explain that it not something that occurs when God chooses to work in a place but that the means for revival are always available to us all. He is not denying that conversion comes by the work of the Spirit in the heart of the sinner. He is clear that it requires Christian to get down on there knees and pray and pray with tears and without this no revival will come.
This attack on his character and motives is nothing but slander and the ones behind this video need to repent quickly. Edwards, Finney, Moody, Torrey etc did a great work for God and anyone who attacks these works of God are attacking God's work. Not a good place to be.
Finney preached about God in the hands of angry sinners. Edwards preached about sinners in the hands of an angry God. Finney preached the gospel of God's grace by which poor powerless guilty sinners could receive Christ and be saved. Edwards preached God selected some for heaven and the rest can go to hell. Finney preached that salvation is a gift from God, received when accepting Jesus as one's saviour. Edwards preached a Lordship salvation. Jesus must be the sinner's Lord, proven by forsaking sin. Funny thing is, if Edwards theology is right then it really doesn't matter what Finney taught because at the end of the day those destined for salvation will be saved right? If someone was destined for salvation and listened to Finney, they would be saved, if they were not they they won't be saved. If Edwards theology is correct then whatever Finney did does not change anything, not so?
On the other hand, if Edwards theology is wrong and Finney is indeed correct, then there are big reprecautions, because it proposes that one can not accept Christ, and that will cause people to wait for some dramatic supernatural event to happen to them before they can be saved instead of taking a step and coming to Jesus.
Though I don't completely agree with Edwards theology, I honor him immensely, and all God did with His life, as does any charismatic or non Calvinist.
But for the reformed it's always a different story, they're always quick to castigate, spread hate, slander, damaging claims and accusations. Poisoning the church 😒

Christianity in general, unfortunately, lends itself to competing views, infiltration and spiritual manipulation without fruit that last.

Numbers 15:40 ASV

Deuteronomy 8:3 ASV – by everything that proceedeth out of the mouth of Jehovah doth man
Jeremiah 23:35-37 ASV
Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbor, and every one to his brother, What hath Jehovah answered? and, What hath Jehovah spoken? [36] And the burden of Jehovah shall ye mention no more: for every man's own word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of Jehovah of hosts our God. [37] Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath Jehovah answered thee? and, What hath Jehovah spoken?
Psalm 95:6-8 ASV
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker: [7] For he is our God, And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, oh that ye would hear his voice! [8] Harden not your heart, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness;
Trust the reformed to spread slander and hate 🤦
