    Abolition of slavery
    In 1780, Pennsylvania became the first state to pass a law to abolish slavery. The Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery made it illegal to import enslaved people into the state, and required slaveholders to register the names of the people they enslaved. Children born in Pennsylvania were also declared free, regardless of their parents' race or condition.
    End of slavery
    In 1847, Pennsylvania's state legislature passed a law that ended slavery in the state. This law did not recognize the property rights of slaveholders, and freed the state's remaining enslaved people, which numbered fewer than 100.
    Pennsylvania's gradual abolition of slavery served as a model for other northern states.
