  1. God can use people in false doctrine, but we must still call their false doctrine out. A person cannot truly love God until they understand some kind of idea of their sinfulness, and understand the grace of God—that all righteousness is an undeserved gift that flows from the Cross. A man under self-righteousness can "look" good, but Scripture says the heart is deceitful, and every man proclaims his own goodness. To a self-righteous legalist their "love" for God is secretly a love for their own righteousness and goodness, not a pure love for God's glory alone. We cannot sugar-coat this.

  2. "There's no just and sinner, you're either just or a sinner…"

Ok then we're all damned. Who seriously goes through a single day and can honestly say "wow I lived a perfect day with no sin!" ? :/

This is why this system of doctrine is so strongly argued against by reformed and lutheran theologians.

Makes perfect sense that you follow up by discussing how he OBSESSED about OBEDIENCE for chapters and chapters unlike other theologians…

When I consider what other figures or groups have obsessed about obedience and wrote endless works about it and what constituted obedience… easiest answer would be THE PHARISEES.

Christ was clear that we are to AVOID their form of religion, doctrine and thinking. Hyperfocusing on methods of legal obedience takes the focus off of Christ and pollutes the gospel.

Christ died for sinners. God justifies the ungodly. Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more.

Meant with love, appreciated listening to the discussion, but I disagree strongly with Charles Finney and his theology.

  3. Even Billy Graham referred to Finney as America's greatest revivalist. I encountered Finney's Systematic Theology and Memoirs while at a missionary training school in 1973. Finney was not an Arminian, but rather in the lineage of the New Divinity – Edwards Jr., Edwards Amasa Park and N. W. Taylor of Princeton which was departing from various aspects of Calvinism. However, the seeds of Edwards writings on Benevolence and Grotius' influence on the New Divinity writers that led to the denial of Penal Substitutionary Atonement influenced Finney. Great to see a revival of interest in that godly man's life and theology.
