I wonder if those directors were genuinely Christian catholic. sadly there is such a thing known as posing as Christians – by darker cults even – where they go to mass to get the host. it's known in Christianity as you say their authentic Christian views would spill into the films and a message would be felt
Martin Scorsese's "Silence" is as deeply a Christian movie as I've ever seen. No cop outs. All about divine grace being for the fallen state of mankind even after our worst disgrace.
Didn’t know this about Hitchcock, but it makes sense to me. As per your comments on him and Scorsese, I think sometimes they value the story over their own beliefs and faith. I think Scorsese is really having a change of that in his more recent movies, though.
So of course he cast a homosexual as the priest.

Glad you liked it!

So many of Hitchcock's films are about how Knowledge = Guilt. That's as Catholic as anything can be.
Another very good Christian film that touches on Catholic faith is the movie Signs starring Mel Gipson ofc!
Why should a Director's faith colour his films?
