  1. Okay, honestly, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a beautifully created movie with strong Christian undertones. It's about medieval Catholicism, but as a protestant (admittedly Lutheran) I really enjoyed it.

  3. As a protestant I do have to say… Yeah, our movies suck. Especially American Evangelical movies can down play suffering and miracles and overall seem rather more therapeutic than theological.

That being said, I would like to mention 4 movies not on your list.

"Sergeant York" is more an American Jingoist film that maybe shouldn't be on this list, but the York wrestling with his sin to become believer and then wanting nothing to do with fighting of fear of the Lord is great Christian fodder for thought. Including his eventual commitment to fight to save lives being epitome of Christian soldier is something I think ever young Christian man considering military service should meditate on.

Similar is "Hacksaw Ridge", only the main character refuses all violence and still shows how love and sacrifice for his fellow soldiers as a medic can just as heroic as taking a life to save a life. Oh yeah. Lots of gore. Keep that in mind.

"To End all Wars" follows POW's in a Japanese camp. They have no fight left except to find peace in Christ under some of the most brutal conditions including literal crucifixions for being a Christian prisoners.

Finally, the last one happens to not be a war film, "The Mission" is one I'll never forget. Ex-slaver takes up with Jesuit Priest to defend a tribe of Christians in the middle of the Amazon during the 18th century. There tribal people are naturally very naked, but Robert De Niro seeking forgiveness from the people he used to hunt will be with me forever.

  4. Hear me out: Jesus Christ Superstar. It's ridiculous in so many ways but also surprisingly complex. I once sat in the garden of Gethsemane and listened to the entire soundtrack; it was a very moving experience.

  5. FYI: No big Hollywood movie studio made any Jesus movie. The biggest one: The Passion of the Christ (2004) was made by Mel Gibson's independent production company and the biggest Jesus TV series: Jesus of Nazareth (1977) was made by a non Hollywood, Italian company. Also, the biggest Jesus internet/streaming series The Chosen was made by an independent non Hollywood production company. So for adapting The New Testament to film/TV, it was never because of Hollywood but despite Hollywood.

  6. Hey! I've watched "The Ten Commandments" and "Prince of Egypt" as a kid!

I loved both movies very much. They would always show it on TV in the Holy Week every year (in the Filipino dub). Both of those films were absolutely great in quality and visuals. Maybe not accurate in some parts, but at least it's great and amazing!

Despite being an atheist (ex Roman Catholic) now, I still loved those Christian movies so much.

The Holy Week is now coming, and if I missed The Ten Commandments, I'd cry for the next 8 months!!!

    Peace and Blessings, brother!

  7. i recommend to watch a movie called 'The Bible: In the Beginning…' (1966). It's not a very well known movie and very underrated i think.
It's a wonderful movie. I watch it once in a while.

  8. I’m a Jesus of Nazareth guy. I watch it annually on Great Saturday between the services of that and Pascha but I usually fall asleep. It’s not to graphic and portrays the story well without adding things we don’t know for a fact if they happened. It also portrays the whole of Jesus’ life. Passion of the Christ adds some details I don’t think should be included because they might not be true.

  9. I would say Hunchback of Notre Dame is a great Christian movie. It has a critique of a religious hypocrite, but it doesn't present his Christianity as an aspect of that hypocrisy. It is instead one of the main crutches that prevents his villainy from overflowing. There are also many subtle, yet overt divine interventions that either protect the heroes from the villain or try to implore him to turn back from his villainous ways. And its a lovely movie, with great music and animation.

  10. Even tho it’s not movie…. And it’s not necessarily finished as a show or even in its written form. I’d honestly throw in Vinland Saga as good Christian content or at least say it’s apart of Christian Core. Its subtle themes towards Christianity, Thorfinns hope and adventure towards redemption and repentance, quotes on Scripture both in the show and manga. I highly recommend it for both Christians and people looking into the faith. Especially since it’s what helped lead me back to Christ into my life.

  11. Another to add to your list is The Gospel According to St. Matthew, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini in the Italian neo-realist style. This movie presents Jesus as he must have been – charismatic, a leader of men.

  12. Hey guys I have a question.. The Christian Orthodox church lines up with my beliefs more than any other. I love father Spyridon, but when I go to the Orthodox Church near my house, the service is so incredibly boring that it doesn't touch my life in any way. Does anyone else experience this or any insights at all? Thanks
