It's absolutely by God's grace, that one could and would go through such cruelty, hatred, and so on, and still be able to forgive and pardon the torturer still. Indeed, the Lord God is great, and yet merciful and would pardon even the most hardened criminal if there's genuine repentance. What a story of a life well and fully dedicated to God!
